Steffanie Epstein has been working as a nurse practitioner since 2017. Prior to becoming a nurse practitioner, she worked as a charge nurse for seven years in which she worked in a variety of healthcare settings, including psychiatry, medical surgical, inpatient rehabilitation, and geriatrics where she accumulated extensive knowledge and experience that continues to inform her work as a nurse practitioner. While working as a charge nurse in the inpatient psychiatric unit at Parham Doctors Hospital for several years, Ms. Epstein was mentored by Jefferson Sommers, M.D.
As a dual certified nurse practitioner, Ms. Epstein specializes in both Acute Care and Psychiatric and Mental Health, specifically in the adult and geriatric population. In treating patients, Ms. Epstein takes a practical approach, which incorporates a solution-focused and cognitive behavioral perspective. The psychiatric disturbances she treats include depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, psychotic disorders, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Despite their diagnoses, Ms. Epstein recognizes that each patient she treats is a unique individual and tailors her treatment plans to meet the specific problems of the individual she is treating. She also takes the time to create an empathic environment for her patients, knowing the importance of a trusting and caring relationship between patient and provider in helping patients to overcome their difficulties in living.
Ms. Epstein completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing at the University of Pangasinan in the Philippines in 2010. She earned her Master’s Degree in the Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner track at Walden University in 2017. While completing her Master’s Degree, she was trained in acute care hospital settings, as well as inpatient and outpatient psychiatry, palliative care, and hospice care. She completed her Post-Master’s Psychiatric Mental Health Certificate Program at Regis College in 2020 and was supervised in her training by Zaffar Ali, M.D.
Ms. Epstein is an active member of American Nurses Association, American Association of Critical Care Nurses, American Psychiatric Nurses Association, and the Neuroscience Education Institute.
In her free time, Ms. Epstein enjoys spending time with her husband and two young children, traveling, and exploring the Richmond restaurant scene.
